Roman Numerals on American Gold Eagle Coins
When gold eagle coins were first produced in 1986, the US mint decided to put the date on the American Eagle gold coins in the form of Roman Numerals. After several years of feedback (and complaints) from the public, they ceased using Roman Numerals. Consequently the years from 1986 to 1991 have Roman Numeral dates, while the years from 1992 on don't. Here are what the Roman Numerals look like for these years: 1986 MCMLXXXVI 1987 MCMLXXXVII 1988 MCMLXXXVIII 1989 MCMLXXXIX 1990 MCMXC 1991 MCMXCI |

thanks for quick reply.
and I think I would have been less dumb to buy nickels instead! LOL |
Re: GAE Dates?
The reason for the roman numerals was to copy the St. Gaudens double eagle. The first few years also had roman numerals.
That is why the mint put them on the GAEs. The Great Ag |
